Lazaus is a conceptual project that uses ethically sourced leather (roadkill) to make luxury furniture. My goal is to change the perception of roadkill and take away the yuck factor that's associated with it.
The design is inspired by classic mid century modern furniture from the 1950’s. Designers like Charles & Ray Eames and Ingmar Relling have been heavy influences in my design process. This project has gone through many evolutions. Initially I wanted to use bent wood by laminating strips of cherry, but I ran into the issue of knots in the wood. The wood used in the project is wood I sourced ethically from urban settings. Trees grown in urban areas don’t need to compete for sunlight so it reuslts in less clear wood. I mill the trees with an Alaskan mill and process it locally in my shop in Bloomington, Indiana.
